What is Reason? – May 25, 2007

What you and I call logic exists in a black and white world – We reason from what is known – We use what is known to discover the heretofore unknown.  That is logic.  That is mathematics.  In math we use a sequence that goes from definitions to postulates to theorems and corollaries and when we’re stuck, we repeat at the next level.

Unfortunately, that’s not the way to find truth.

It’s certainly not wrong to reason that way – it’s sometimes necessary.  We have to make simplifying assumptions.  We have to make postulates and go from there.  We have to operate from them and then go from there – as if they were true.

What we do wrong is that we forget the as if part and that can be dangerous – We stop testing or throw out the very minor things that don’t fit in.  We try to fit the world into an artificially constructed system of explanations.

On a very simplistic level very few mathematicians are familiar or adept with Riemannian Geometry (which is not Euclidean Geometry.)  We deviate in the very first year and learn a geometry of planes and parallel lines,  These work locally, but this is not the geometry of the world and we forget.

We have to start with the world and from there use our systems of logic.  Unfortunately, we don’t do that – maybe don’t even know how to do that

It would work if we already knew everything – except a few things –  But because our systems are based on arificial constructs, we don’t know what really matters, what, if anything is causal, what is significant.

There are things that are black and white.  I think you are either pregnant or not – no almosts here.  There are incontrovertible facts about history – but they are, at best, indicative of trends, of probabilities.

We need to start with an assumption of physical reality and use our systems to go from there – if we can.  Look – we still don’t know fundamental things – like when life starts and ends.  We’re beginning to develop a knowledge of the truth of the world that has little to do with our previous pictures.  We know that the universe we can see is a micro dot of what there is.  We’ve been very smart – very – to even get to quantum mechanics.  It just doesn’t fit with that definition ->postulate->theorem pretty picture.  Nothing in our current system allows things to be in two places at the same time.  Nothing is based on the Law of Attraction.

Isn’t it time we start again?  I think Alpha Lo at the Institute of Noetic Science is beginning to develop a physics that includes consciousness as integral.  At Last.

Seek the wisdom of the ages, but look at the world thorugh the eyes of a child.

Life is the only game in which the object of the game is to learn the rules.
Ashleigh Brilliant

A human being is part of the whole, called by us “universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal delusions and to the attention of a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
Albert Einstein
